MUST READ: Studies show these are the best foods for your brain
From Dr. David Eifrig, MD, MBA, editor, Retirement Millionaire:
Our favorite diet proves its benefits yet again… Two recent studies have shown that Mediterranean diets reduce cognitive decline in older adults. A Mediterranean diet includes plenty of fish, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil.
The first study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, followed 447 participants with cardiovascular disease. The participants were split into three groups – two groups followed a Mediterranean diet (one with nuts, one with olive oil), and the third group followed a standard, reduced-fat diet.
The participants in both Mediterranean diet groups performed better on memory and cognitive tests after four years on the diet than those in the reduced-fat-diet group.
The other new comprehensive study came out in the leading journal Neurology. This study followed 27,860 people aged 55 and older for five years. The participants answered questions about the types of foods they ate, including fish and nuts. They then took cognitive tests at the beginning, after two years, and after five years.
After five years, the participants who ate lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish were 24% less likely to have any mental decline compared with those who had poor diets.
Evidence keeps piling up – eating right can protect your brain. I enjoy a healthy diet with plenty of fish, nuts, and olive oil. I love to drizzle extra-virgin olive oil on my salads and cook with heavier virgin olive oil. (You can read more about the Mediterranean diet and our olive-oil taste test here.)
