Trump’s ‘body shaming’ is fake news at its finest

“Getting a good picture everybody? So we look nice and handsome and thin?” – Donald Trump

In other words… Capture our good side, Trump asks of the photographers.

I can think of more unreasonable requests made by world leaders, many from Trump in particular…

But given the importance of this historic moment  the first meeting between a sitting U.S. president and the leader of North Korea  what better time for a flattering photo op, or at least a little levity?

While this summit offers a gold mine of serious journalistic fodder for media outlets around the globe to feed on… there’s always room for a bit of “fake news.”

Here’s a quick roundup of the best headlines…

USA Today: Fat joke? Make us look ‘nice and thin,’ Trump tells photographers as Kim looks on

The Independent: Trump leaves Kim Jong-un grimacing after asking photographers to ‘make us look thin and handsome’

MashableWatch Kim Jong-un’s stunned reaction to Trump’s fat joke

Many on the Left have gone as far as to accuse Trump of “fat shaming.” Others have taken it even further… “I never thought I would have anything in common with a spectacularly violent, brutally oppressive North Korean dictator who starves his own people,” writes a journalist at Mashable,” but I was glad we could share this join moment of horror together.”

These people who would tiptoe around discussions of weight and body image are more than happy to forget about Kim Jong Un’s track record as a cold-hearted despot.

So here’s a quick refresher for the unsilent minority in the media, who desperately need a reality check (courtesy of the Human Rights Watch)…

Under the rule of Kim Jong Un, North Korea remains among the world’s most repressive countries. The government sharply curtails all basic liberties, including freedom of expression, religion and conscience, assembly, and association.

North Korea operates secretive prison camps where perceived opponents of the government are sent to face torture, starvation rations, and forced labor. Fear of collective punishment is used to silence dissent

Is it a case of cognitive dissonance?

Or has the Left’s hatred of Trump caused human rights violations to completely fall off their radar…
